More than 380,000 current and former members of the Community Health Plan
of Washington may have had personal information stolen in a data breach,
officials confirmed.
The "data security incident" began nearly a year ago, on Jan. 16, but the
nonprofit health plan service did not become aware of it until Nov. 7 and
did not confirm it until Nov. 30.
The organization waited until now to notify members to allow time to hire a
consumer security firm, line up translation services and set up a call
center for anxious members to contact. The group says that, so far, there's
no evidence of any harm to its members.
Letters were sent Wednesday to 381,534 people, notifying them of the breach.
A statement released Wednesday by Community Health Plan says, "It appears
that names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and certain
coding information related to health care claims may have been accessed.
Banking and credit information was not contained in the data."
All affected members are being offered free credit and identity monitoring
services for 12 months, along with dedicated resources for all questions.
Health plan officials also notified the FBI and state regulators, including
the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
Community Health Plan of Washington provides health insurance through
Medicaid.
