The Internet plays a big part in the lives of millions of people throughout
the UK, and with technology and the online world showing no signs of
slowing down, it is important to ensure that you keep all of your data
protected and away from the wrong people. In order to do this, you should
take the correct steps and put the right measures into place. For you to be
sure that you have done this, I have created a list of my top tips for data
security heading into 2018.
1. Back Up Your Data
Although you may never be subject to hacking, data breaches or unfortunate
disasters, you can never be sure when any of these will happen, if at all
and so it is still essential that you back your data up, just in case. By
backing your data up, you are able to prepare for the event that you lose
your data, meaning that you have continued access, even in the event that
something goes wrong. The backups that you keep should be stored in a
different location, being protected and carefully managed. This is because
if something major does go wrong, you still have complete access to the
data, regardless of what has happened and to what extent.
2. Have A Disaster Recovery Plan In Place
You should identify the potential risks by conducting a risk assessment, in
order to help you create your disaster recovery plan. Any potential risks
that you find or that you may face should be considered when creating your
disaster recovery plan, allowing you to prepare for things such as malware
infections, DDoS attacks, data loss and more.
3. A Team Data Security Focus
A strong password is often the difference between a criminal entering and
accessing your personal or private information. You should ensure that you
follow the password criteria set by particular websites, as well as
ensuring that you regularly update it. A password manager can also help you
to remember and encrypt your passwords, adding extra security. All
employees should be required to run a secure password system, updating it
after a certain amount of time and ensuring that the password itself is
strong, and unrelated to the business. By including the whole staff team in
your efforts to improve data security, they will look to find their own
ways of protecting data, which will only of course benefit the business and
ensure that all of its data is fully secure and protected. You could also
provide training and information to your staff about data security,
ensuring that they all know the importance of it.
4. Implement A Document Access Level System
A way to ensure that security is high for certain documents would be to
implement your own document access system, providing certain levels of
access to certain employees. Not only does this mean that only employees
with a certain level of authority can access the files, but it also means
that people that aren’t members of the business cannot gain access to
documents either.
