Houston-based Fondren Orthopedic Group is notifying 30,049 patients
that their medical records may have been damaged in a malware attack.
Former and current patients of K. Mathew Warnock, MD, may have been
affected by the incident. In November, Fondren Orthopedic Group
discovered that a limited number of medical records had been damaged
and are no longer accessible because of a malware incident.
Patient data that may have been affected included names, addresses,
telephone numbers, diagnosis and treatment information and health
insurance information. Fondren Orthopedic Group is asking affected
patients to prepare new patient forms with detailed medical histories.
Although medical records were damaged, Fondren Orthopedic Group said
that there is no evidence patient data was access or removed from the
practice.
"The privacy and security of information in Fondren's possession is a
high priority for the Fondren Orthopedic Group. Accordingly, it has
strict security measures in place to protect information in its care.
Upon learning of this incident, Fondren immediately took steps to
restore its systems and ensure the security of Fondren's network. In
addition, Fondren is reviewing its policies and procedures relating to
data security and taking steps to enhance its existing security
protocols," the orthopedic group said in a statement.
