COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) — A data breach is causing big problems for
nearly a hundred employees working for the Columbus Metropolitan
Library system. Thieves got their names and personal information and
then used it to open fraudulent bank accounts.

The victims found out about all of it over the weekend. One worker
discovered a fake bank account had been set up in their name and that
started a domino effect. More people came forward and said the same
thing had been done to them. Now, investigators are trying to track
down the crooks. The library system is trying to figure out how it all
happened in the first place.

"We do take the safety and security of all of our staff very
seriously. So we immediately filed a police report," said system
spokesman Greg Dodd.

The scheme was well thought out. The accounts had money deposited
through payday loans and then withdrawn through debit cards. Those
accounts were set up at Huntington Bank. The Columbus Metropolitan
Library is now working with the bank and investigators to gather as
much information as they can. All working to get to the bottom of this
scam.

"There seems to be no distinct pattern and we just don't know at this
point, but we continue to be diligent to determine what that cause
was," said Dodd.

The library system is in the process of putting together a plan of
action, including fraud protection for employees impacted. Important
steps as they try to determine how that information was accessed.

Something important to note, ABC 6 has been told that no customers of
any area libraries have been impacted by this information breach. They
stress that information is secure and no customers have come forward
with any concerns.
