NAGOYA -- Possible unauthorized access to a hospital's server in the
central Japan city of Kasugai, Aichi Prefecture, has disrupted some of its
medical care services.
Kasugai Rehabilitation Hospital announced on Jan. 20 that it had
temporarily shut down its server after experiencing trouble in the
electronic medical chart and medical accounting systems. The hospital
reported the damage to Aichi Prefectural Police as unauthorized access from
outside was suspected.
According to the hospital, new medical examinations and hospitalizations
are possible, but the glitch has made X-ray images, as well as magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) exam and other data inaccessible, affecting some of
the facility's medical services.
The system glitch was detected on Jan. 12. The accumulated data includes
electronic medical charts for tens of thousands of patients, and past data
including X-ray images cannot be seen. At present, a personal information
leak has apparently not been confirmed.
On Jan. 14, trouble occurred at the Nippon Dental University Hospital in
Tokyo, whose server was believed to have been infected with a computer
virus. While Kasugai Rehabilitation Hospital is investigating the cause of
the system glitch, it reported the matter to police because there was a
possibility of a cyberattack targeting the hospital.
